Cheska: What grade are you in and what school do you go to?
Christien: I’m in grade 10 at St. Joseph Secondary School
Cheska: What are your favourite subjects at school?
Christien: Science, Math, Religion, and Music
Cheska: What instruments do you play in band?
Christien: I play the Trombone
Cheska: What is it like being in a music class?
Christien: It’s really loud and noisy but, you’ll get use to it so, it’s alright.
Cheska: So, you like it (being in a music class?)
Christien: Yeah, I like it.
Cheska: What are your favourite genres?
Christien: I like Rap/Hip-Hop and R&B
Cheska: Who are your favourite artists?
Christien: For rap, I like Drake and Migos. For R&B, I like Jorja Smith.
Cheska: In school, I read an article about teacher’s connecting with their students. Like how Mrs. Morrison talks to you guys. How do you like it?
Christien: How she relates to us?
Cheska: Yeah like that?
Christien: Oh, she like talks to us all the time and makes sure that we are comfortable in our classroom. So, we’re open to talk (more), and nobody is shy in that class.
Cheska: For your concert, what songs (pieces) are you going to play?
Christien: We’re gonna play, Handclap, The Light of Dawn, and Brown Eyed Girl
Cheska: You had me as a PATH student (Peer-As-Teacher-Helper) in grade 9, so how do you like having a PATH student in a classroom?
Christien: It’s really good. It’s really helpful. It helps me understand music personally and, I can tell that it helps the others (other classmates). It also helps them connect to their teacher as well as, the PATH student.
Cheska: Would you want to be a PATH student in grade 12?
Christien: I’m not sure. If I have the time, then probably.
Cheska: So far, how was your high school experience like?
Christien: Hmmm, it’s alright. It’s different than what my teachers from elementary school were telling me.
Cheska: So, what did they (your elementary school teachers) tell you?
Christien: They told me it was gonna be really difficult but, it turned out to be easy. It’s kinda fun when you meet the right people.
Cheska: Have you taken any private music lessons?
Christien: Yes, I have.
Cheska: For what instruments?
Christien: For piano.
Cheska: Didn’t you take drums?
Christien: and, drums.
Cheska: What was were your experience learning piano and drums?
Christien: For piano, it was really fun. It’s good to start at a young age so, you’ll be passionate about it. For drums, I started late so, I wasn’t that passionate about it.
Cheska: How can music apply to your everyday life?
Christien: Music changes your mood. For example, if you’re listening to a really good song, and you’re feeling sad that day, the song will make you feel happier. Music can help you feel motivated to do things that you don’t want to do.
Cheska: I know you’re not going into music (as a career), what program are you going to?
Christien: For university? I’m going to astrophysics.
Cheska: Do you want to include music as a hobby?
Christien: Definitely.
Cheska: Ok. That’s it! Thank you!
